Manuscript volume containing a variety of occasional pieces, essays and poems in a single hand. Scientific and economic topics include a copy of Herschel's "An Account of Three Volcanos in the Moon," the barometer, the thermometer, the mariner's compass, birth and death statistics in France and England, "Present Scarcity of Grain," the balance of trade, and "the Impolicy of Granting a Bounty on the Importation of Corn." Other subjects include "Women Compared with Men," rankings for men of genius and women of beauty in 1792, sketches of political figures on commentaries on English authors, "Verses Written in the Spring," "On Reading the Bible," "Comparison between Past Ages and Present," and "To Habit." The volume was originally begun to record the town accounts of Kirkby Stephen for 1751/52; five pages of these remain.

William Herschel(b. November 15, 1738, Hannover, Germany–d. August 25, 1822, Slough, England) was a British astronomer and composer, and brother of fellow astronomer Caroline Herschel, with whom he worked. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars.
